It is interesting that you feature the American Conservative outfit in this list because in my opinion they represent the very worst of the head-up-your-arse back-to-the-past world view that is the very cause of our seemingly unresolvable problems. The kind of aw-shucks aint everything wonderful world view as depicted in a Norman Rockwell painting and as promoted the morning-in-america douche-bag Ronald Reagan.
This reference deconstructs Reagan’s legacy.
Plus this one stark image describes the rapacious world-view that they really promote and celebrate (while all the time pretending otherwise).
It is interesting to note that some of the images in this mural were featured in the book The Pentagon of Power by Lewis Mumford.
I understand your criticism. I knew that American Conservative would stick out like a sore thumb on the News list, but that’s half the reason I included it. I like the “conservative pluralism” message put forth by Robert Nisbet and I think it balances a lot of my own liberal tendencies. Of course, most people today who claim to be “conservative” are seriously warped and should probably get their heads examined. That’s not the type of conservatism that resonates with me. I like a great deal of American Conservatism articles (maybe not even a majority of them. I must confess I don’t frequent the site much), and I especially like them because the messages they promote are usually lacking on my favorite news sites (counterpunch & truthdig). As much as I support social programs in alleviating the suffering caused by capitalism, I am actually a much stronger believer in striving to liberate oneself from centralized power of any sort (whether they be governments or corporations). I’m quite disgusted by the extreme level of dependence all Americans (including myself) have on corrupt institutions. Here are a couple of American Conservative’s finer moments:
P.S. Reagan was indeed a douchebag
One of the key themes that AC crowd are pushing is how wonderful the new pope is – and by extension old time back-to-the-past “authentic” catholicism, uncorrupted by the scourges of modernism, liberalism, and postmodern relativism
Lets have some context here:
The “catholic” church pretends to have a claim on the souls of ALL human beings, and claims that it is the ONLY source of truth in the world.
Power always corrupts those who yield it, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, especially when it pretends to be exercised in the “name of “God”, and/or by an entirely bogus “great commission” to convert the entire world to the “one true faith”.
The “catholic” church (which is not in any sense universal) is by some accounts collectively the worlds third largest property owner with prime real estate in most cities on the planet. It is also a big-time player in the world of big business and finance. Including the black criminal economy – the vatican bank used to (and probably still does) launder money for the mafia and all kinds of other low-life individuals and outfits
It is primarily a business corporation the primary purpose of which is to protect and extend its assets and market share.
It also runs the worlds largest “privately” owned 24/7 propaganda outfit, the tentacles of which reach into almost every village on the planet. Which means that eveyone should take the new pope’s carefully crafted PUBLIC image with a bathtub full of salt.
And how did the “catholic” church become the world dominant religion? Certainly not because its members practiced the good principles that Jesus taught via the Sermon of the Mount, or because they practiced the moral guidelines set out in the 10 commandments.
Jesus of course was never ever in any sense a Christian, he was always and only a Jew, and yet he supposedly founded the Christian church 2000 years ago. Never mind too, that what is now the “official” institutional church only came into existence 1700 years ago. The “official” version was of course created by the church fathers who won the culture wars of their time and place.
It was of course created to consolidate their very worldly power and privileges. Which is precisely, exactly and ONLY the purposes of all of those on the right-wing and so called conservative side of the “catholic” church.
The 1922 poem The Waste Land by T S Eliot described the situation of Western civilization as it then was. Despite the seeming outward glamor of the world in 2013, and even some of the very tentative examples of social progress, nothing has appeared anywhere within the Western world since 1922 which has made any real difference. Certainly not within the deeply back-to-the-past walls of the Vatican or the “catholic” church.

Also the truth-telling website Enlightened Catholicism which is run by a female catholic mystic (catholic in the real sense). And the websites linked to it too.
Okay, thanks for the history lesson. Most of that seemed irrelevant, but what do I know? I do appreciate your contribution. I also suspect that the Catholic Church may be trying to improve its image and stay relevant in a world where anti-capitalist sentiment is growing. You certainly don’t need to persuade me that the Catholic Church is an imperfect institution. Heck, I don’t believe in any organized religion for that matter. But I do like the new Pope, I like what he says, and there are plenty of people doing good things in the world even if they are affiliated with imperfect organizations. Like it or not we share the world with lots of people whose morality is guided by leaders in the Catholic Church. The Pope’s words do matter as they have an influence on many people throughout the world. I’ve met plenty of good people doing great things in Catholic Worker houses, teaching religion classes, doing faith-based social justice work like anti-war protests, etc. I would like to see more seemingly good-natured church-going folk take seriously the issues Pope Francis has raised. I much prefer people talking about the good advice the Bible has had for them in their life compared to “peace purists” who proclaim their atheism to be far superior because it’s supposedly not tainted with superstitious anti-humanist dogma. No belief system is perfect. Anti-religious zealots are prey to just as many harmful myths as anybody else I’ve met. My philosophy is not to take your beliefs too seriously, and don’t take yourself too seriously. Just chill out and try your best to be a good person to others and yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in radicalism (as in “getting at the root of things”); but I don’t believe in intellectuals policing other people’s good intentions.
